Reviews
[During Autumn 1984/Spring 1985, this book served as my sophomore theory text at Arkansas State University. Since that time, I have never seen a theory text which comes close to the caliber of this book - written by, Bruce Benward (died, 2007); Former Professor of Music (University of Wisconsin-Madison)]. "Music: in Theory and Practice-Volume II [Second Edition]," INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:LATE-RENAISSANCE POLYPHONY. Use of consonance [unisons, fifths, octaves, thirds and sixths]; "musica ficta" and regulated dissonance [passing tone, suspension, "portamento," "nota cambiata" and neighboring tone]; rhythm ["macro-" and "micro-"]; idiomatic writing; linear cadences ["clausula vera," "plagal" and weak-interior]; and, form ["Motet Style" - hocket, parallel motion, text setting and text painting]. AN IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS OF A TWO-VOICED MOTET, "Beatus Homo" (COMPOSED BY, Orlandus Lassus; CIRCA 1532-1594), IS PRESENTED.STYLES OF COMPOSITION ["fugue" and variation technique], LARGE FORMS ["sonata-allegro" and "rondo"], ALTERED HARMONY [borrowed chords, chromatic mediants, quartal chords, etc.] AND DEVICES OF POST-ROMANTICISM AND TWENTIETH-CENTURY [alternative scales (church modes, duodecuple, pandiatonicism, etc.); third relationships in harmonic progressions and cadence structures; melodic-doubling in parallel; intermingling of duple/triple meter; etc.] ARE ALSO DISCUSSED.CHAPTER 25 HAS SENTIMENTAL VALUE. "Analysis: 'Wie bin ich froh!' from Drei Lieder op. 25 no. 1 by Anton Webern (1883-1945)," SERVED AS INSPIRATION FOR MY MASTER THESIS (University of Central Arkansas) ON VOCAL SERIALISM. IN CHAPTER 25 OF THIS BOOK, Professor Benward DISCUSSES THE BASIC GUIDELINES OF TWELVE-TONE COMPOSITION SET FORTH BY, Arnold Schonberg (1874-1951) - FORM [prime, inversion, retrograde and retrograde-inversion], TRANSPOSITION AND SET THEORY. THIS BOOK PRESENTS THE USE OF A matrix AS A TOOL FOR ANALYZING SERIAL TECHNIQUE."Music: in Theory..." INCLUDES EXERCISES AT THE END OF MOST CHAPTERS, AN APPENDIX AND GLOSSARY. [A "hard-to-find" workbook accompanies this text, with more in-depth student exercises]. THE ONLY THEORY BOOK YOU NEED!
