Reviews

William Blake is so much lionized in the current day that students of his work might be surprised to encounter a critic whose assessments are not uniformly in praise nor without specific basis. Such, however, are the urbane and informed comments of Mr. de Selincourt, whose critical efforts also include books on the artistic achievements of Giotto and the poetry of Walt Whitman.I appreciate Basil de Selincourt's essays on Blake as much as I do any others in my considerable library of Blake comment and criticism. He considers Blake "on his merits," without preliminary attraction or aversion, and offers both a sympathetic and realistic (at times bracingly acid) response to Blake's poetic and illustrative output. I highly recommend this early 20th-century assessment by a sophisticated critic who examines minutely and writes engagingly on his subject. This 1909 volume is also available online, if you can find it. de Selincourt's fine and balanced observations will reward the effort to discover them.
